❌❌❌ TRAUMA DUMPING ON APPS You don’t evoke a reader’s sympathy by dumping every bad thing that has happened to you. If your essay reads like a trauma dump, here are three changes to make immediately: 1. Invoke a feeling of curiosity in the reader - The essay no longer begins with a medical history, but a strange reckoning that makes the reader want to know more. 2. Identify emotions / experiences that are universal - Admissions officer (AO) are numb to bad news alone — they need a reason to lean in. As a writer, you must ask questions or find insights that make your unique scenario universal. - Example: ❌ “I suffered from yellow fever” ✅ “I kept asking myself: what did I do to deserve this?” 3.
